July 3, 2020. Animal Save Movement is demanding that Formula 1 reject Sofina owner, Michael Latifi’s, blood money. 65 year old peaceful protester Regan Russell was killed by a transport truck in front of Sofina’s pig slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ontario, Canada on Friday, June 19, 2020. That day she attended a Toronto Pig Save vigil at Fearmans slaughterhouse to peacefully protest ag gag Bill 156, which had passed two days prior in Ontario. Animal Save Movement activists will be at this weekend's GP with banners to raise awareness of this atrocity.
Regan Russell was a kind, elegant, strong, and courageous person. She was a mentor to others and she always did activism with kindness in her heart. Regan was one of Canada’s animal activism pioneers and was involved in multiple other movements including gender equality and racial justice. Three weeks ago she attended a Black Lives Matter protest in her hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. Activists had petitioned Michael Latifi for years for a safety agreement but he ignored their requests.
Every day ten thousand pigs are killed by Sofina owned Fearmans. “Nicolas Latifi’s car is funded by killing animals and ultimately Russell Regan was killed at a Sofina facility two weeks ago while protesting animal injustice,” says Anita Krajnc, co-founder of Animal Save Movement.
Sofina and Michael Latifi have strong ties to Formula One racing:
- In 2018 Michael Latifi purchased a 10% interest in the McLaren racing team for £204 million.
- Michael’s son Nicholas Latifi debuts as a driver for Williams, racing this weekend in the Austrian Grand Prix.
- Sofina Foods and their subsidiary Lavazza Coffee sponsor McLaren, Williams and Nicholas Latifi.
- Michael Latifi is also rumoured to be the frontrunner to buy Williams Racing.
Sofina Foods claims to be driven by core values of integrity, respect and accountability and a unique culture of continuous improvement. Yet Sofina and Executive Chairman Michael Latifi refused to agree to a safety agreement, where trucks transporting individuals to slaughter would voluntarily stop for two minutes so that activists could safely bear witness. This ultimately resulted eventually in Regan’s death, which was completely tragic, avoidable and unnecessary.
We would like that in honor of Regan Russell, you take the following measures.
- We call on the sponsors, supporters and owners of Formula One to reject Sofina blood money.
- We call on all F1 racing teams to reject Sofina blood money.
