FIRST VIGIL
At Sarnia Animal Save‘s first vigil at Franz Turkey Farms, Sydney the turkey found freedom and went home!
The vigil was held on July 9 and saw support from London Chicken Save and Windsor-Detroit Farm Animal Save.
Here’s Sarnia Animal Save organizer Tosha’s account of Sydney’s rescue:
“A beautiful thing happened this Monday afternoon.
We had our first Sarnia Animal Save peaceful protest, joined by the well-known animal rights activist James Aspey, and with support from London Chicken Save, Windsor-Detroit Farm Animal Save, and Sarnia-Lambton community members.
Brittney Mae Town, Maria Leonardii and myself (Tosha Lobsinger) respectfully approached Gary the farmer in hopes of visiting the turkey sheds, and maybe even rescuing one individual. Everyone involved was touched by the beauty of what unfolded.
Gary liberated one turkey for us to bring to a sanctuary and live out her life surrounded by many other rescued farm animals, and nothing but love. Many people from the vegan community quickly worked together to find a temporary and, within hours, a permanent home for her at FrogHollow Farm Sanctuary.”
The rescue and vigil received local news coverage:

Manitoba Animal Save held a vigil on July 13 outside Maple Leaf “Foods” slaughter plant in Brandon. They report:
“Today 9 amazing activists came together in Brandon, MB to bear witness to the thousands of pigs that come in to Maple Leaf slaughterhouse daily. These are some of the victims’ faces. These sweet, intelligent animals will be turned into products for humans to consume. Just look into their eyes.. Such human-like eyes and expressions. You can see one of them frothing at the mouth from extreme temperatures. We were able to record the temperature inside the truck and it was at 39.8 C but it is probably much hotter in there. Can you imagine yourself in there?”

Climate Vegan‘s core message is: Help save the planet by going vegan and becoming active.

Via Vegan Comics:
If you think “Veganism is so hard I could never do that”, try being an animal in a slaughterhouse.
Animal agriculture is the leading cause of the destruction of our planet as it is going on right now. Global warming, deforestation of the rainforests, pollution of our oceans, species extinction… so much is CAUSED by our consumption of what the animal agriculture industries are producing. Stop buying those products and you stop supporting all of that suffering and loss, not only for those who are direct victims, but for yourself as well.

“At the weekly lamb and sheep sale in Wagga today, over 40,000 lives were sold and sent off to slaughterhouses in NSW and Victoria. Another almost 6,000 Merino lambs were sold. They are also destined for slaughter once their wool production declines in a few years.”

Save Movement Medellín report from their vigil at
“We won’t forget their looks loudly asking for help, their desperation, the terror in their movements, the pain everywhere … we will not forget their tears, we will be present everyday to make them visible again and again, bearing witnesses to this; we will accompany them and we will denounce it, to raise our voices once again for their liberation!

HONG KONG

Hong Kong Pig Save report from their July 15 vigil:
“A cold green fence seperated the two of us. From inside the truck, you gave me a solemn stare and started shoving the chain lock with your nose, trying to break free. I watched in poignant silence. Raindrops kept falling on me. I don’t seem to understand — how come “freedom” is such a lofty noun exclusive to human beings? Being deprived of freedom, then life; hell on earth is right before my eyes.”

IRELAND

Cork Animal Save, Galway Animal Save and North West Ireland Animal Save came together on June 18 to hold their first vigil for the pigs, at the Rosderma Irish “Meats” slaughter plant.

MEXICO

La Paz México Animal Save held their first vigil on July 8 at the municipal slaughter plant.
“Crying while being transported to the slaughterhouse. Crying because she knew that his life had come to an end.
Can you imagine what non-human animals feel when they are on their way to the slaughterhouse?
On Sunday we met this beautiful cow; as soon as we saw her on the truck, we saw her sadness, pain and disappointment.
She trusted the humans who took her to her death. She knew that they would deliver her to people who would take her life the next day.”

The vigil received local press coverage: “Activists document cruelty at slaughter plants”

Loaded with thousands and thousands of young and innocent animals. Frightened, confused, some injured, and all of them, unprotected.
They do not know that they were born to be a supermarket product.
A simple commodity. In Israel.
15 minutes of pleasure at some meal for someone that can not see them.
They were taken away from their mothers to travel for days on the high seas, to the other side of the world, to only there, find their deaths through bleeding.”

FIRST VIGIL
Kelso Chicken Save held their first vigil on July 11 at Foster Farms. They report an amazing turnout.
“150,000 lives are taken every single day at this facility alone. 26 beautiful activists came to bear witness to the suffering of these lives.
Bearing witness is *such* an important part of the animal liberation movement…we show love and compassion to souls who have only ever known a life of being objectified, and we show the reality of their situation to people who think there’s somehow a humane way to kill someone who obviously doesn’t want to die. These industries want the reality of their lives hidden so that people won’t question what they’re contributing to. We need to help educate people like our previous selves to expose the truth. Every time we step outside of our comfort zones to expose the truths behind these industries, we help change the stars for future animals, and that’s beautiful.”

Las Vegas Animal Save rescued a rooster from the slaughter plant where they hold their vigils. Please see images from their July 14 vigil at Highland ‘Poultry’ and read about Prince the rooster.
“We truly appreciate all of you who came out today to bear witness, and even though we did not spend as much time as we could we the individuals damned to death, we nonetheless made a presence and stood strong in representing them. A change in a truck’s delivery schedule will not keep us from them.”
“A former ‘slaughterhouse pet’ was rescued and given a second chance.
For a few months, this rooster has been seen dancing around the slaughterhouse door, never straying too far from the cages of hens awaiting their deaths. The conclusion was made and later confirmed by the owners that he was kept alive as a pet, and that his life was spared because he made himself useful by herding loose chickens back into the slaughterhouse.
To die in a slaughterhouse is a miserable way for someone to cease to exist, but to live in one as the resident rooster chicken wrangler, deprived of sunlight and nutritious foods, unknowingly sentencing the hens, the flock you think you’re protecting to death is little to no existence at all…
Now, he can protect the flock he feels his duty to guard, and he can live a life free from the chains of circumstance based on his species.”

Toronto Pig Save started in December 2010, with a promise to the pigs of doing a minimum of three vigils and vegan outreach events each week, all year round. We bear witness as a community of pigs, cows, chickens and other farmed animal victims in slaughterhouse trucks. The animals want us to be present and, with the most pleading eyes, ask for our help when we see them through the portholes of transport trucks. Just as if we were in those horrid trucks, we would want the whole community to be there fighting for our freedom, liberation, rights, and equality. In a way, we are there. All life is one and, “when (wo)men wish to harm others, they really do evil to themselves,” Leo Tolstoy said in his animal rights story “Esarhaddon, King of Assyria”. It’s our positive duty and obligation to act in the present to try to stop the most egregious injustices before us.
“When the suffering of another creature causes you to feel pain, do not submit to the initial desire to flee from the suffering one, but on the contrary, come closer, as close as you can to her who suffers, and try to help her.” – Leo Tolstoy
In seven years, The Save Movement has grown to over 400 Save groups around the world. Our dream is to have regular vigils at every slaughter plant worldwide. We regularly give seed money to new Save groups and require funds for literature, posters, subway ad campaigns (iVegan.ca) and vegan outreach events.
Make animal liberation your priority in life! Think of 10 kind things you can do each day and encourage your friends to do the same! Join us and participate in our weekly vigils, start a Save group in your community, and be a regular donor.
